How much WAR did the Flyers add and lose this offseason?
There has been an undying desire for people that analyze hockey, to summarize a player’s impact with one single number. Something you can point to and see whether or not a player actually did a lot of what contributed to their team winning games, or that they are actually a detriment to the team and shouldn’t be playing as much as they are (or at all). Obviously, in baseball we have WAR (Wins Above Replacement) and that is a sport that is a little bit easier to measure considering the spe...
Flyers prospect Jack Murtagh looking to rebound from rough freshman season
The Flyers certainly made some noise in the second round of last year’s draft, making a whopping four selections and leaning heavily into a particular archetype of player in that range, snapping up a group which collectively brings a good amount of size and energy, but also largely offered their fair share of promise of contributions on the offensive side as well. The Flyers got away with their handful of lottery tickets, and while each in that group would remain to some degree a longer term p...
Tuesday Morning Fly By: August is for the cottage
*Boy do I hope You People are ready for a few weeks of 3-4 link Fly Bys, because… hoo boy. No one is working. Not even Charlie, smdh. Know who is, though? WE ARE, BABIES. And we wrote about the single most important thing that will determine the Flyers’ ultimate success this season. [ BSH ] *We are already 1/5th of the way through our summertime 25 Under 25, and up next at number 20 is one of the 2025 draft picks who didn’t really score as much as you’d like in his first year at college. ...
Flyers 2026 Top 25 Under 25, No. 20: Jack Murtagh
Next up in our list is Jack Murtagh, a 2025 second rounder that disappointed in his freshman year at Boston University. Coming out of the US National Team Development Program in his draft year, the Flyers had hopes that Murtagh would find a way to translate his scoring to the NCAA level. That certainly isn’t what happened in his first year with BU, but the potential of Murtagh earns him a spot at No. 20 on the list. No. 20: Jack Murtagh 2025-26 Primary League/Team: Boston Univ...
The biggest factor that will determine the Flyers 2026-27 season
The Philadelphia Flyers enter the 2026-27 season with higher expectations than last year. They’re looking at the playoffs not just as a possibility but as a given, although it’s not going to be easy to get there. They’re hoping goaltender Dan Vladar can repeat most of the numbers he delivered in his first year with the Flyers. Or at least come close to those statistics. And get Joseph Woll to pick up whatever slack might be there. They’re hoping for a healthy season from Tyson Foerster, a stro...
Monday Morning Fly By: One month to go
*The Flyers are set to open a pretty major next season in just under two months time, and a good portion of their success is going to hinge on how their young players fare. [ BSH ] *Porter Martone in particular has a chance to be a major driver of success for the Flyers as they move into this next phase. [ NBCSP ] *Speaking of Martone, he did some reflecting recently on the most embarrassing moment of his playing career. [ BSH ] *On a more serious note, we’re digging into what h...
Ranking the Flyers’ first-year players by expected impact next season
There hasn’t been a huge amount of turnover from the 2025-26 version of the Flyers to the one slated for training camp in September. There’s been a few guys put out to pasture, while others have entered the mix in the hopes they can help put the Flyers into the playoff hunt again and possibly put in a much deeper run. Obviously, had Leo Carlsson not had his offer sheet matched, it’s probably a safe bet he would’ve been topping this list quite easily. However, that’s not the case. What is ...
Porter Martone shares the most embarrassing moment of his career
Porter Martone looked like he could do no wrong when he joined the Philadelphia Flyers at the end of last season. The rookie put up 10 points (four goals, six assists) in his first nine NHL games, and then scored the game-winning goal in each of his first two postseason contests, finishing the playoffs with five points in 10 games. Martone is the favorite for the Calder Trophy this season, and he was the Flyers’ representative at the NHLPA Rookie Showcase in Chicago this week. E...
Carter Amico is turning heads at the World Junior Summer Showcase
It’s the dog days of summer. We’re trying to find ways to cool off in this unrelenting heat so that we can at least enjoy this time where we are not even more miserable outside in the cold. It’s the great balance. All of this doesn’t mean that hockey has stopped. Even with the Stanley Cup awarded and basically any worthwhile free agent signed and almost every NHL team comfortable with their roster as it stands several weeks before any training camp starts, the sport is still churning away...
How Rick Tocchet’s teams have performed in their second season
In his first season behind the bench in Philadelphia, Rick Tocchet brought the Flyers back to the playoffs for the first time in five years. Now, with a full season in his system and another offseason to implement his vision, year two should provide a better indication of what his impact actually looks like. How have Tocchet’s other teams performed in their second season with him behind the bench? Team results Let’s start with the most obvious marker of improvement: team records. Fro...
Friday Morning Fly By: It’s Friday
*Folks we’re in the doldrums. In case you hadn’t noticed. But fear not, your BSH fam is still out here working hard in the content mines. As a result, you get a full report on the big signings the Flyers made for the Phantoms yesterday. [ BSH ] *We also have some thoughts on a few things the Flyers might be able to do to fix their stupid, heretofore unfixable power play. [ BSH ] *In case you were not aware of this fact, the Flyers have seven defensemen on the roster. Each and every o...
Flyers 2026 Top 25 Under 25, No. 21: Nathan Quinn
After profiling some Phantoms defensemen the past few days, we now move to the Q, where former sixth round pick Nathan Quinn has really surprised with his offensive level. An unheralded prospect taken with pick No. 164 in 2025, Quinn improved his stock within the Flyers organization with his offensive production with the Quebec Remparts, and earned the No. 21 overall spot on our Top 25 Under 25. No. 21: Nathan Quinn 2025-26 Primary League/Team: Québec Remparts (QMJHL) 2025-26 S...
3 bold ways to fix the Flyers’ power play next season
You don’t have to be a hockey expert to know that the Philadelphia Flyers need to improve on the man advantage. They’ve been one of the worst teams on the power play year over year, no matter the personnel or coaching staff. It almost seems like a curse at this point. Last season, the Flyers converted on a league-low 15.7% of their power-play opportunities. That was somehow an improvement over the prior year when they went 15% on the power play, and 12.2% the year prior. Since the 20...
The one thing every Flyers defenseman must improve next season
Next season for the Philadelphia Flyers is a peculiar one. The past couple seasons felt more like a period of evaluation — trying to determine what players will be here in the long run and who the Flyers should try and commit long-term to. That time now feels like it has ended. They have moved on from players who did not fit and now have an early collection of players that appear to be doing some darn good stuff after making the playoffs and even winning a round. But that was last season,...
Ranking every Spider-Man movie from worst to best
Once on The Good Place , Kristen Bell’s character, Eleanor complained about there being too many Spider-Man movies. She’s probably right? But I don’t care, I love them. There’s a reason that this character keeps getting movies made and Sony desperately tries to make his side characters into something in order to keep the character’s rights. Spidey is great! Today, Jason and I will be ranking our top Spider-Man movies in anticipation of the newest Spidey movie being released later this week – B...
Phantoms sign Brady Berard, Andrew Perrott to one-year deals
As the offseason presses on, the Phantoms are continuing to tinker with their roster for next season, making new additions around the edges. The team announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed forward Brady Berard and defenseman Andrew Perrott to contracts for the 2025-26 season. Berard, at 22, has just wrapped up his senior collegiate season, having spent the first two seasons at Providence College before transferring up the road to close out his college career at Boston College. An...
Thursday Morning Fly By: What’s that chaos
*Big News™ yesterday came in the form of Jamie Drysdale making an appearance on Noted Hockey Podcast What Chaos!, in which he spoke about the homies and displayed his extensive media training in the face of a little bit of nonsense. [ BSH ] *If you’re a subscriber over at Charlie’s website, you can check out his latest on stakes, specifically the high ones, and how it’s kinda nice to have to deal with having them in our lives again. [ PHLY ] *Got a little various and sundry Philadelp...
Rick Tocchet reveals what impressed him most about Matvei Michkov this summer
It’s nearly the end of July, but there’s no shortage of things to talk about surrounding the Philadelphia Flyers this week. That’s partially due to Matvei Michkov, who draws eyes no matter what he’s doing. This time, it was another Michigan goal in the KHL “Match of the Year” charity game in Russia over the weekend. Michkov still thinks a Michigan goal in the NHL is ahead of him, and everyone marveled at his lacrosse-style tally as part of a hat trick in that game. That includes...
Flyers 2026 Top 25 Under 25, No. 22: Ty Murchison
Going from one defenseman knocking on the door for a spot as Rasmus Ristolainen’s potential future replacement to another, we turn to check in with fellow Phantoms defenseman Ty Murchison. Having just wrapped up quite a promising, albeit brief, rookie season in the AHL, Murchison made quick work of adjusting to the professional game and certainly made himself some fans in the organization along the way. There’s still another gear left for him to hit, but he’s acquitted himself well, and m...
Jamie Drysdale opens up about Zegras friendship, Michkov drama, and Carlsson offer sheet
Jamie Drysdale has emerged as an important piece of the Philadelphia Flyers. The bar was set high when he was acquired in the Cutter Gauthier trade in January 2024, and after a year and a half in Philadelphia, Drysdale had a bit of a breakout campaign last year. Drysdale scored a career-high eight goals and tied a career-high with 32 points in 78 games last season. That production and his defensive development helped him earn a four-year, $26 million contract extension this summer. ...
Did the Flyers do enough to keep up in the Metropolitan Division?
The true dog days of the NHL offseason are here. Only a handful of impactful players remain unsigned, and the rumor mill has slowed to a crawl. As July comes to a close, it’s a good time to look back on what teams have done so far this offseason. We all know what the Flyers have done, but how have the rest of the teams in the Metropolitan Division fared this summer? Let’s take inventory of each team’s biggest additions and subtractions in an attempt to figure out where the Flyer...
How Flyers starting goalies have historically fared in their second season
When he was signed last season, nobody could’ve fathomed how big of an impact Dan Vladar had on the Flyers. Originally considered to be competition for Sam Ersson, Vladar worked his way into a long-term extension while also making Ersson quite disposable. He was remarkable in year one. Now, that year is over and done with, and the second year is all that matters. Over their history there have been 67 Flyer goaltenders. But there have only been a select few to have essentially been the pro...
Wednesday Morning Fly By: Gonna put the Mich in Michigan
*Matvei Michkov scored a Michigan in a charity game and now he can’t stop talking about it. We love a laser-focused king, don’t we folks? [ BSH ] *Evidently Matvei passed up vacation to focus on his training and some Noted Experts seem to think that ought to be enough to get Rick Tocchet off his back. Maybe. We’ll see. [ Yahoo ] *Now what do we always say summer is for? That’s right, class. Summer is for lists. Like this one, of guys we think the Flyers should consider bringing in on...
Flyers 2026 Top 25 Under 25, No. 23: Hunter McDonald
After a pretty volatile rookie season in the American Hockey League, defenseman Hunter McDonald worked through the bumps of a slow start to the season to turn himself into one of the Phantoms’ more dependable defenders by the time the end of the season rolled around — and earned himself a bit of time up in the NHL, joining the team for a road trip in January and then making his proper debut in the final game of the regular season, as a result. The state of his stock in relation to the res...
Matvei Michkov will keep trying to score a Michigan in NHL: ‘I believe it’s still ahead of me’
Matvei Michkov has yet to score on a Michigan attempt in the NHL, but he hit another one over the weekend in Russia. The Philadelphia Flyers winger was once again a part of the “Match of the Year” charity game at SKA Arena in Saint Petersburg, alongside other NHL stars like Alex Ovechkin, Artemi Panarin, and Mikhail Sergachev. Michkov trained with these Russian stars leading up to the game over in his home country. It was his second straight year participating in the charity match, a...
