Happy Friday, everyone, and it is happy because the Cubs finally won a game! Let’s try to take that positive energy into the weekend, shall we? Before we can get to the weekend, though, we’ll round up a little bit of news from the latter part of the week. In today’s links, we look at […]
Free of charge for the discerning reader. Happy birthday to Joe Biagini, and a mighty host of others. Today in baseball history, in 1928 – At Yankee Stadium‚ the Yankees sweep a pair from Washington‚ 3-2 and 12 – 3. Leo Durocher‘s bases-loaded triple in the opener gives George Pipgras (8-1) the win. Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth both slug a pair of homers in the […]
Iowa Cubs The Iowa Cubs were blanked by Indianapolis (Pirates), 3-0. Javier Assad started and left the game after issuing a one-out walk in the fifth. But Luis Peralta then let that run score and two more of his own, so technically Assad got the loss. The final line on Assad was one run on […]
Go get ‘em, Colin.
For well over a century now, these teams have been at each other's throats — and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates preview, Thursday 5/28, 5:40 CT
The Cubs finally snapped their 10-game losing streak Wednesday night in Pittsburgh and you could almost feel the sigh of relief on the North Side of Chicago. They posted 10 runs against the Pirates while holding the Buccos to just four. Under ordinary circumstances I’d just want to savor this win and not worry about […]
Just like that, the waking nightmare that has been consuming the Cubs comes to an end. I don’t know about you, but I have no surprise whatsoever that the streak went away with a thump and not a whimper. The Cubs put 10 runs on the board while running up 14 hits and drawing seven […]
You knew the Cubs’ losing streak wasn’t going to last forever. Right? Right? The Cubs exploded with a 14-hit, seven-walk, two-homer offense and crushed the Pirates 10-4 Wednesday evening in Pittsburgh, at last ending their 10-game losing streak. The 10 runs were as many as they had score in the last six games of the […]
Today’s Reflections I don’t know what to do at this point, but, hey, we’ve been here before. I threatened to post positive “tomorrow” phrases, but the gods smited me by a 12-1 margin on Tuesday, so I will forgo that beating again. But this is a definite reflection — Wednesday was the fifth anniversary of […]
For Curtis Mead, it feels like Chicago Is So Two Years Ago.

The Chicago Cubs have signed left-handed reliever Aaron Bummer to a minor league contract, adding a veteran arm to a bullpen that has been one of the more injury-ravaged units in baseball this season.
Bummer was released by the Atlanta Braves on May 19 after posting a 7.63 ERA and an 8.62 FIP across 19 appearances and 15.1 innings, with a walk-to-strikeout ratio of 10 to 13 that showed a pitcher who could not consistently miss bats or locate his fastball.
He is expected to report to Triple...
Left-hander Ty Blach elected free agency on Sunday. Today he re-signed with the Cubs and reported back to Iowa to make tonight’s start. Or rather with Iowa in Indianapolis. Reminds me of what Jack Paar said when he returned to the Tonight Show after quitting for a month: “ . . . my last words were […]

Cubs lineup: Pirates lineup: Jameson Taillon, RHP vs. Bubba Chandler, RHP Jameson Taillon had another rough outing last Friday against the Astros, though he allowed only one home run instead of five. So, progress? The Pirates hit him hard at Wrigley Field April 12, including […]

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates preview, Wednesday 5/27, 5:40 CT
An imploding rotation, disappearing offense and only two innings played with a lead.
Without commentary, I present all the numbers the Chicago Cubs have posted during their 10-game losing streak. They have been outscored 65-25 during the streak, so the average loss has been by four runs. The team has batted .185/.288/.293 (60-for-324) with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 87 strikeouts. The pitchers have a 6.18 ERA, […]
The Pittsburgh Pirates offense caught fire Tuesday night after a 12-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. One of the bigger storylines from that game is rookie Esmerlyn Valdez hitting his second home run of the season in just his fourth game played. Valdez hit his first home run of his Major League career against the […]
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Cubs baseball. Those two 10-game winning streaks feel like they were a long time ago as the Cubs dropped their 10th game in a row Tuesday night, falling 12-1 against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. It’s honestly an impressive amount of variance in their streakiness. The Cubs are […]
We’d have to travel in the way back machine to 2017 to find a team that had two 10+ game winning streaks and one 10+ game losing streak. That team was the Dodgers. It won 104 games and reached Game 7 of the World Series. So nothing in the numerology department says that the ship […]
